Questions and answers

What is a web proxy?

A web proxy is a website that opens other websites for you. Instead of connecting to a website directly, your browser connects to the proxy, and the proxy's server connects to the website. The website sees the proxy server's IP address and location instead of yours, and your network only sees that you are using OnlineProxy.eu, not which websites you open.

Why are websites blocked?

Websites are blocked in different places for different reasons. Schools, universities, workplaces and public Wi-Fi networks often filter websites such as social networks, video sites or games. Internet providers block websites when a country's law or a court requires it. And some websites block visitors themselves, based on the country their IP address belongs to (geo-blocking), so that videos or articles are only available in certain countries.

How does a web proxy unblock websites?

A network filter decides what to block by looking at which website you connect to. Through OnlineProxy.eu, you only connect to our website, so the filter sees nothing it was told to block. A website that blocks certain countries sees our server, which is in the EU, so pages limited to visitors from the EU open as if you were there. Please keep in mind that schools and employers may have rules about getting around their filters.

How do I unblock websites at school or at work?

Enter the address of the blocked website in the box at the top of this page and press Go. Your school's or company's filter only sees a visit to OnlineProxy.eu, so the website opens, with nothing to install and no administrator rights needed. Keep in mind that monitoring software on a managed device can still see what you do, and that your school or employer may have rules about filters; see the guide unblocking websites at school or work.

Can I open websites that are blocked in my country?

Yes, if OnlineProxy.eu itself is not blocked where you are. Blocks by governments and internet providers stop the connection to the website, but through the proxy you only connect to us, and websites that geo-block see a visitor from the EU. We log page visits for legal reasons, so if your safety depends on staying hidden, use the Tor Browser instead; see the guide websites blocked in your country.

What is the difference between a web proxy and a VPN?

A VPN is an app that sends all the internet traffic of your device through another server: every app, every website. A web proxy works in your browser only, for the websites you open through it, and needs no installation, account or administrator rights. That makes a web proxy the quickest way to open a blocked website, for example on a computer where you cannot install anything. For protecting everything your device does, a VPN is the better tool.

Is it anonymous?

Websites you visit do not see your IP address. They can still recognise you if you log in or tell them who you are. For legal reasons we log when you use the service, your IP address and the addresses of the pages you open; see Privacy. Do not use the service for anything illegal.

Are my logins and data safe?

Connections to websites that use https stay encrypted all the way to that website; our server only passes them on and cannot read them. Cookies and logins are kept in your own browser, never on our server, so other visitors cannot use them. On a shared computer, choose "Clear cookies and site data" in the menu when you are done.

Is using a web proxy legal?

In most countries, using a web proxy is legal, just as using a VPN is. What you do through it has to be legal too: the laws that apply to you and the terms of the websites you use do not change because you use a proxy.

Does it work on phones and tablets?

Yes. OnlineProxy.eu works in current browsers on Android, iPhone and iPad as well as on computers, with nothing to install. Some private browsing modes switch off a browser feature the proxy needs (service workers); if a website does not open, try a normal window.

Why does a website not work?

Some websites refuse visitors that come from servers instead of home connections, or ask for a browser check (for example Cloudflare's) that cannot be completed through a proxy; video platforms sometimes do the same for playback. Try again later, or try the classic version.

Why is the server in the EU?

Our server is in France, in the European Union, so EU data protection law (the GDPR) applies to the little data we handle. It also means websites see a visitor from the EU, which opens content that is only available there.

What does it cost?

Nothing. There is no account, no subscription and nothing to install.
